From Paris our grand tour took us to Lyon down in the south east corner of France at the confluence of the Rhone and Soane rivers. This has been an important city from the time that Gaul was governed by the Romans. We have friends in Dardilly close by to Lyon from when we lived in Chorleywood and were twinned with Dardilly. They made us very welcome as usual and drove with us to the French Alps to see Mont Blanc and the Aiguilles du Midi. This was a special treat for Gail and Tom who come from the mountains of Colorado where Tom is a ski instructor in the winter months.
We had a great day out and I will let the pictures speak for themselves. It is really easy to see why the mountains are referred to as ‘aguilles’ which means ‘needles’ in French. The characteristics are very different from the Rocky Mountains with their crumbling tops and high tree line.
