June 2006 - A Colorado Interlude
We have spent the month of June relaxing at our cabin in the Colorado mountains. For those who do not know, we have a cabin here on five acres of woodland. It is at about 9,500 feet up at the top of Trout Creek Pass and on the western edge of South Park. Yes there is a real South Park! (“Who killed Kenny?”)
Relaxing is a relative term as we were quite busy felling trees, logging and constructing fencing. We had a special party with Bridget, mark and our good friends Tom and Gail felling trees which had died after the house construction, only to discover it was illegal in the middle of a stage 2 fire ban. Whoops! Fortunately the sheriff who told us was a neighbour and off duty. Fines would have been $1,000 per chain saw!! We had just finished the job when we found out and at least the driveway had been cleared...

Our eldest daughter Jo was out to visit with her boyfriend Dave and it was good to see them relax from their hard-working careers for a while. We took the opportunity to visit Bridget for the weekend of the Evergreen Rodeo and watch the parade pass through town. Aspen had her first helium balloon and relished every moment of it. We could not help contrasting the parade with the carnival events in the French Caribbean islands. Different but still great fun. A bit taken over by advertising and politicians for our taste!

This has been a great break for us and we have had lots of time to erect fences, cross mountain passes and hang out with our great friends Gail and Tom. Lots of barbecues and wildlife. The chipmunks around our house were getting tamer and tamer as we left them sunflower seeds to find. The bear had been seen on our land about a month previously but we only saw deer, porcupine and rabbits as well as ground and tree squirrels of many varieties. Back to the boat and the accumulating list of jobs...

We will return here in September/October for another break before travelling slowly south again looking for winter sunshine in the Bahamas.
